Based on Boston Ballet’s “Adaptive Dance” program and supported by the Anna and John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome at Children’s Hospital and the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, the Be Beautiful Be Yourself Dance program provides 10 weekly dance classes to ten 5-9 year-old-children with Down syndrome.
Teachers Becca Jacobson and company dancer Sally Turkel work closely with The Children’s Hospital’s renowned physical therapist and Down Syndrome expert Pat Winders to build kinesthetic and cognitive skills through locomotor movements that incorporate shapes, rhythm, and basic dance steps. Be Beautiful Be Yourself Dance programs now being held at Colorado Ballet's studios. Participating children now have the opportunity to observe the professional company in rehearsal after their own class. Be Beautiful Be Yourself Dance program was even featured on 9News “Storytellers” in May 2010.
The next Be Beautiful Be Yourself Dance program class will begin February 27, 2012. This 10-week class will be held every Monday from 4:30pm - 5:30pm and 5:30pm - 6:30pm. The class will explore basic movement concepts within the context of creative movement and ballet fundamentals. This class is open for children ranging from ages 10 to 13-years-old and is limited to 10 children. For other ages, call Anca E. at 303-468-6664. The class fee is $150 for 10 weeks including attire and shoes. Partial and full scholarships available. MHDSA members receive a 15% discount. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. The application deadline is March 15, 2011.
