Colorado Ballet Opens 2023/2024 Season with Swan Lake at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, October 6-15, 2023
DENVER, CO (September 6, 2023) – Colorado Ballet will welcome patrons back to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House for the start of its 2023/2024 Season with eight performances of Swan Lake, October 6–15.
Swan Lake is the quintessential classical ballet set to Tchaikovsky’s acclaimed score, performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra. Featuring virtuosic choreography after Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, with additional choreography by Colorado Ballet Ballet Master Sandra Brown, Amanda McKerrow, and John Gardner, Swan Lake presents an approachable, fairy-tale storyline suitable for all audiences, from first-time attendees to ballet aficionados.
“Swan Lake is one of the most important classical ballets of all time,” stated Artistic Director Gil Boggs. “It’s a monumental feat of artistic excellence and technical ability. This production is challenging for even the most seasoned dancers, both physically and psychologically, from the principal roles to the incredible corps de ballet.”
“Believe me, though, the hard work is well worth it,” continued Boggs. “When you first watch the corps of 27 swans enter the stage, dancing perfectly in sync with one another and Tchaikovsky’s iconic music, it’ll take your breath away—there’s nothing quite like it. The entire ballet is full of those awe-inspiring moments, from the first note to the final curtain. You won’t want to miss it.”
Swan Lake recounts a classic tale of tragic romance. Only true love can break the spell cast upon Odette by the cruel Baron von Rothbart, who has transformed her and her companions into swans. Prince Siegfried encounters Odette on the shores of a moonlit lake and proclaims his eternal love for her, which will release her from her curse, only to be deceived thereafter by Rothbart and his daughter Odile. At Swan Lake, audiences will discover if true love can conquer evil.
