Colorado Ballet Presents Lady of the Camellias February 3-12, 2023 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House
DENVER, CO (January 11, 2023) – Colorado Ballet will continue its 2022/2023 Season of Timeless Stories with the Denver premiere of Val Caniparoli’s ballet Lady of the Camellias, February 3–12, 2023 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.
Based upon the famous novel La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas (fils), Lady of the Camellias follows troubled courtesan Marguerite as she navigates forbidden love, betrayal, and loss in the heart of 19th century French society. A love story like the films Camille (1936) and Moulin Rouge! (2001) and Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata, this ballet features Val Caniparoli’s virtuosic choreography that was inspired by figure skating, contemporary and folkloric dance.
Caniparoli’s ballet is set to the music of celebrated Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, which will be performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra alongside a trio of special guest artists—Solo Pianist David Korevaar, Mezzo Soprano Abigail Nims, and Baritone Andrew Garland. The romance and elegance of 19th century France in Lady of the Camellias is brought to life through costume design by Robert Glay de la Rose, scenic design by David Gano and Robert Glay de la Rose, and lighting design by Trad A. Burns.
“Colorado Ballet is thrilled to premiere Val Caniparoli’s acclaimed ballet Lady of the Camellias,” stated Artistic Director Gil Boggs. “The level of artistic excellence involved in this production is incredible. When you combine the talent of our dancers with Caniparoli’s choreography, visually splendid designs, and Chopin’s music performed live by exceptional artists, something truly magical happens on the stage. I don’t know that Denver has ever experienced a work quite like this, and I look forward to sharing this beautiful ballet with our community in February.”
Tickets for all eight performances of Lady of the Camellias are on sale now. Colorado Ballet’s recent 2022 productions of the Dracula and The Nutcracker sold out completely, so purchasing early for the best availability is strongly recommended.
Colorado Ballet’s production of Lady of the Camellias is presented by Lynnette Morrison. Colorado Ballet also receives support from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD).
