Choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, Midsummer returns to Denver for the first time in a decade with new sets and costumes

DENVER, CO (January 28, 2026) – Step into a magical realm where fairies fly, lovers quarrel, and humor reigns. Colorado Ballet proudly presents two-time Tony Award®-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a family-friendly ballet that captures the wit and wonder of Shakespeare’s play. Originally commissioned by the Colorado Ballet in 1997, this celebrated production returns for the first time in a decade with sumptuous new sets and costumes by internationally acclaimed designer Robert Perdziola. Shakespeare’s beloved comedy unfolds to Felix Mendelssohn’s iconic score, performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra.

Performances run March 6-15, 2026, at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

“Christopher Wheeldon is a storytelling genius, and he brilliantly blends classical and lyrical ballet to bring Shakespeare’s story to life,” said Artistic Director Gil Boggs. “He has beautifully captured Midsummer’s humor and delight, while matching the drama and lyricism of Mendelssohn’s score. It’s a light-hearted and fun ballet that will engage audiences of all ages.”

When four young Athenians flee into the forest, they unknowingly stumble into a quarrel between Oberon and Titania, the fairy king and queen. With the help of an enchanted flower, the mischievous fairy servant Puck sets off a whirlwind of comic confusion among the lovers. Joined by a troupe of hapless rustics—one of whom is transformed into a donkey—this dreamlike adventure weaves romance, humor, and wonder into a joyful finale where harmony is restored and love triumphs.
