Training intensifies as students mature and gain more knowledge of classical ballet vocabulary. Classes focus on strengthening placement for pointe and male’s work, developing articulation of port de bras and transition steps, pirouettes, clarity of Allegro, musicality and maturing artistry. Performance is emphasized at this level and opportunities increase to include Fall Feature and First Fridays in our Black Box Theater. During this progression, students become aware of the long-term goals inherent to classical ballet training. Each student’s natural abilities are fostered, and students are encouraged to pursue their passion for dance.

Male specialized training becomes more advanced as they continue to refine the fundamentals of ballet, emphasize clarity in positions, develop core and back strength and essential foundations for male’s virtuosic technique.

In addition to Ballet, Stretch and Condition, Pointe and Male Technique classes, Level 5 students’ curriculum includes Character and Contemporary.

Character dance is the stylized representation of a traditional folk or national dance, mostly from European countries, and uses movements and music adapted for the theater. Examples of Character Dance are found in full length classical ballets such as Swan Lake, Coppelia, and Sleeping Beauty. Level 5 Character will strengthen the fundamentals of this style with emphasis on positions, dynamic movement, and musicality.

Contemporary dance seeks to explore the limitless possibilities of the human body in motion, emphasizing fluidity, spontaneity, and individual expression. This form of dance celebrates the uniqueness of each dancer, encouraging them to embrace their own artistic voice and explore their personal narratives. At its core, contemporary dance often focuses on the connection between movement and emotion, aiming to evoke a wide range of feelings and experiences in both the performer and the audience.

Students in this level are eligible to participate in Colorado Ballet Academy’s Youth America Grand Prix and Denver Ballet Guild programs.
